Home About Me

Two Suitcases and a New Start in Gothenburg

I still remember my last move, in April of last year. My roommate and I had to carry everything out of an entire room, and even thinking about it now makes me tired. Moving is, quite simply, exhausting.

This time, I was moving to Gothenburg alone to study, so I did not have nearly as much to take with me. Even so, the preparations eventually filled two large suitcases, along with several smaller bags.

Packed suitcases

The large suitcases managed to hold my clothes, my cervical support pillow, and quite a few other things. Vacuum compression bags were a lifesaver. That pillow is fairly firm and quite thick, so it is not something you can simply squash down by hand. I had been wondering how I was going to pack it, but the compression bag reduced its thickness by about 80% with almost no effort. I really cannot praise vacuum bags enough when it comes to moving.

The new place

With help from my roommate, I arrived in Gothenburg at around nine that evening and carried all the boxes and bags to my new home. I am renting a room in the home of a local Chinese family. When I first looked at the listing, the family seemed friendly, and their daily routine sounded compatible with mine. They run a restaurant in town and usually have breakfast at home, so as a tenant I still have a fair amount of freedom. I can use their kitchen and the household utensils, which makes daily life much easier.

The room itself is nearly 20 square meters. It comes fully furnished, with a wardrobe, a bed, and the basic necessities, so it is essentially ready for move-in. It was also clean and comfortable when I first saw the photos and details, which was why I decided to rent it. After everything was settled, I asked a local classmate to visit the place on my behalf, and they also thought it looked good.

Now that I have moved in myself, I am happy with the choice. It feels like somewhere I could stay for quite a while.

Over the weekend, I picked up some daily necessities from IKEA and a few other places, then arranged the room as best I could. It is beginning to look quite comfortable.

Tomorrow morning, I will officially begin at school. I am looking forward to this new chapter.
